Protein misfolding and aggregation is a hallmark across neurodegenerative diseasessuch as Alzheimer’s disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Since these diseases are mostly sporadic, the formation of protein amyloids in the nervous system depends of chemical and biological triggers within the neuronal environment. In this seminar, following a brief introduction to basic concepts related to the formation of protein aggregates and amyloids in health and disease, I willdepart into an overview of our recent progresses in respect to understanding biochemical modulators of protein aggregation in neurodegeneration processes. Specifically, I will address the roles of neuronal metal ions and amyloidogenic pro-inflammatory cytokines, which we believe play critical roles inaggregation cascades and disease pathomechanisms.
